Benefits of the TGMmini car door speed measuring device

The new car door velocity meter TGMmini combines the accuracy of the TGM5 which is tried and tested by leading OEMs with an even easier, faster and more connectable user experience. Install the TGMmini in seconds on the car body and get the speed fo the passing car door in metres per second.

Every car ride ends and starts with the use of the car door. So the feel of the automobile door and the closure and opening effort is the first and last impression the car makes to the customer. A safe closure of the car door is also an important safety feature.

The speed of the closing car door is a characteristic value to check the quality of an assembled car door.

The car door closing meter TGMmini from glasmacher electronic is an accurate and easy to use device to measure the speed in meters per second of car doors and closures.

Measuring possibilities

The TGMmini can measure any passing object and shows the speed in meters per second on the illuminated 4 cm OLED screen. It can measure the velocity at any phase of the opening or closing process of car doors and closures. It can also measure the speed of the closing or opening process of vertical moving objects like trunks or lids. For example, to check the gas spring damper.

The measurement of the speed of sliding doors is also possible.

Why measure the car door speed?

A unique and repeatable parameter of every vehicle door or closure is the slowest speed required to safely close the door, measured just before the door snaps into the car body.

There is a specific force necessary to overcome the breaking zone consisting of:

• the inner pressure of the car interior – release flaps – see TGMbaro to check the „Interior Air pressure“

• the door hinges

• the door restrainer

• the door seals

to safely close the vehicle door.

Force is the result of the acceleration of an object. A specific automobile door has a given weight so the car door speed just before the breaking zone is a direct and proportional result of the force.

So it doesn‘t matter at what opening angle the driver pushes or pulls the car door, it has to speed up to that one unique minimum speed for a safe and secure closure.

The TGMmini is the easiest and fastest way to find this minimum required speed for a safe closure.

 F => 1 N = 1 kg · m / s2

Example

Closing processMeasured speed (m/s)Door conditionSlowest speed closed (m/s)Fastest speed open (m/s)
10.65open0.65
20.72open0.72
31.03closed1.030.72
40.70open1.030.72
50.95closed0.950.72
60.85closed0.850.72
70.77closed0.770.72

0.77 m/s = is the slowest speed necessary for a safe closure of the measured car door. The delta between the fastest speed open and slowest speed closed is below 0.10 m/s (0.77 – 0.72 = 0.05 m/s)

Decide with a simple switch if the door is closed or open after every car door closing effort.

When the difference between the

  • slowest measured speed closed and the
  • fastest measured speed open

is below 0.1 m/s, the display will indicate „found“ and will make a „beep“ sound.

Why measuring the car door speed?

Use the automobile door specific value of the lowest speed in meters per second for a safe closure of this car door for:

  • End of line testing
  • Compare the same car model at different times or plants
  • Determine Target Values
  • Use the free TGMscan Android App to safe the data and assign it to the measured car via barcode Vehicle Identification scan

Quality control

  • Include the TGMmini in your durability test stand and use the included data export options (measurement result is exported as UART via cable and bluetooth)
  • Compare the values at different mileages and wear of the car door
  • Compare the values at different environments – the TGMmini can measure the speed indoor and outdoors independent any outer conditions as lighting or climate (up to +60 degrees celsius and -20 degrees celsius)

Benchmarking

  • Compare your necessary speed eg. door closing effort with the average values of other brands
  • Determine a harder / softer door closing approach depending on your brand marketing

Development

  • Use it at different development stages

Component testing for OEMs or suppliers of:

  • Hinges
  • Seals
  • Trims
  • Restrainers
  • Latchers
  • Strikers
  • Gas spring dampers

Noise Vibration Harshness NVH Testing

  • Study the noise (interior or exteriort) of the car door closing depending on different closing speeds
  • Vibration to the car body depending on different closing speeds

Easy and versatile to mount

Use the included magnetic holder or adapt it with a 3d Printer specific to your car body

Three rules for mounting the TGMmini:

  1. The TGMmini measures the closing velocity in one direction. Turn the devices around to measure in the opposite direction.

2. If the measured edge is not ferromagnetic use the included „magnetic measurements edge“ and mount it on the moving car part – otherwise no counterpart needed only the TGMmini

3. Keep the distance between the TGMmini and the moving measuring edge below 10mm

Use: Magnetic holder STL file; TGMmini as STL file

Easy to use

Test Mode:

  • Install the device
  • Close the door
  • Get the speed on the 4 cm OLED Display
  • No operator input necessary!

Measuring Mode:

  • Install the device
  • Close the door
  • Check if the door is open or closed
  • Toggle the switch on the TGMmini accordingly
  • Repeat
  • Once the difference between lowest speed closed and fastest speed open is below 0.1 m/s, the slowest speed necessary for a safe closure is shown

In Measuring Mode, the display indicates:

  • Speed of last closure (a)
  • Slowest speed closed (b)
  • Fastest speed open (c)

Easy to connenct

Export the measurement results to your PC or Android Smartphone

Bluetooth

Use the free of charge Android App „TGMscan“ to get the results to your Smartphone, assign it with the barcodescanner to the „Vehicle Identity Number“ of the measured car, the door type and save and share the results

Bluetooth + Cable connector

Use the free of charge USB-Bluetooth or cable connectors to connect the TGMmini to your Windows PC

Use the free of charge „TGM USB EXE“ to use the measurement results like a keystroke and save them in for example Excel for further Data processing

Very accurate

The TGMmini measures the speed by recognizing the change of the magnetic field when a ferromagnetic edge passes the sensor.

This measurement principle makes it:

  • Insensitive to outer conditions – independent of light, temperature, color
  • No misinterpretation of which part of the car door starts the measurement – the magnetic field of the whole automobile door starts and stops it
  • Highly repeatable with a clear start and stop trigger point and a measurement length of around 55 mm and no average calculation or smoothing of the results
  • High counter frequency of 1 MHz
  • High maximum speeds 0.13 m/s to 5.0 m/s tested but up to 9.99 m/s limited by the display are possible
  • No altering parts so no change in accuracy over the time (24 months calibration cycle at our place or external is recommended)
  • Factory calibrated by delivery
